A promising component needs to earn its place in this system.
A platform can have attractive capabilities and still leave an important application requirement unresolved. Qualification connects the candidate with the work it has to perform.
Howard Pearlmutter has carried this work from requirements and research into practical evaluation, prototypes, integration, and technical transfer.
Make the requirement examinable.
What does the system need? Which conditions matter? What would demonstrate the capability? What observation would disqualify a route or require another approach?
A requirements matrix can organize the questions. Its usefulness depends on whether the tests and evidence actually address the application's purpose.
Investigate the implementation you intend to use.
A general capability claim is a starting point. The selected version, configuration, environment, and surrounding components need appropriate examination.
In a document-management engagement for a multinational genetics-sector client, Howard researched and evaluated alternatives, tracked project and implementation activity, and qualified more than two dozen versions and interim builds of Nuxeo.
He implemented a proof of concept against a requirements matrix, including plugins, transferred capability to staff, and launched an operational pilot. See the case.
Examine the boundary as well as the candidate.
What does the component assume about its inputs, environment, resources, and caller? What does the application assume about the result? Which difference could make a successful isolated test misleading?
These questions connect qualification with architecture and integration. They can reveal a need for a different boundary rather than a different product.
See enterprise boundaries and native/managed integration.
Turn the findings into a usable choice.
The result should explain what fits, which constraints remain, what has been established, and what further work would be informative. Your team can use that account with its own people and other collaborators.
A bounded qualification contribution can stand alone. Architecture, prototyping, implementation, or transfer can follow when useful.
Begin with the capability the candidate needs to provide and the condition you most need to understand.
